Our Programs
Scholarships and grants for education and opportunity
Our programs are designed to reduce the educational and economic barriers that can follow justice-system involvement — for individuals and for families.
Our Programs
Six pathways to education and opportunity
Each program addresses a different barrier that can follow justice-system involvement. Select a program to review its description, eligibility requirements, maximum funding amount, application period, required documents, and current application status.

Application Calendar
Two funding cycles each year
Scholarship and educational grant applications are considered within two annual funding cycles. A cycle only opens after the Foundation confirms funding and activates applications for a program — cycle dates alone never open applications.
Fall Funding Cycle
May 1 – July 31
Applications accepted
Funding intended for the Fall academic term.
Programs in this cycle
Programs using these cycles will be listed here once the Foundation activates them.
Winter Funding Cycle
October 1 – November 30
Applications accepted
Funding intended for the Winter academic term.
Programs in this cycle
Programs using these cycles will be listed here once the Foundation activates them.
The Mental Health & Counselling Support Fund and the Technology Access Grant operate on their own intake schedules and do not follow these academic cycles unless the Foundation announces otherwise.
Applicant Guidance
Eligibility & Supporting Documents
You do not need every listed document — submit the documents that exist in your circumstances. If primary or legal records are unavailable, supporting documents may be provided instead.
Primary or legal documentation
Depending on your circumstances, one or more of the following may be available. You are not required to submit every listed document.
- · Copy of an Information or charging document
- · Court record confirming a conviction
- · Court record confirming withdrawal of charges
- · Copy of a peace bond
- · Copy of a judgment
- · Affidavit from a legal representative
Supporting documentation
Supporting documents help demonstrate your eligibility and circumstances. You may upload more than one.
- · Letter from a lawyer or legal representative who assisted or supported the applicant
- · Letter from a nonprofit organization
- · Letter from an authorized organizational representative
- · Other relevant supporting documentation approved by administrators
Proof of Enrollment
Applicants must provide an official document from their educational institution confirming their enrollment.
- · Official enrollment confirmation or Registrar's letter
- · School-issued document confirming full-time or part-time status
- · Document identifying the student, institution, program, and academic term
- · Offer of admission accepted provisionally; final enrollment confirmation required before funding is released
If you do not have primary documentation
Not everyone has access to court records or legal documents. If primary documentation is unavailable to you:
- · Indicate in your application that primary documentation is unavailable and provide a brief explanation.
- · Upload more than one supporting document to demonstrate your eligibility and circumstances.
- · The supporting documents you provide are considered together to determine whether eligibility is adequately demonstrated.
The absence of primary documentation alone never disqualifies an application.
How your documents are protected
Your privacy is protected at every step of the application process.
- · Uploaded documents are stored in confidential private storage and are never published.
- · Access is role-based: only you and authorized Foundation reviewers can view your application and its documents.
- · Before submitting, you review clear consent language covering how your information is used and protected.
- · Applications are saved as drafts automatically, so you can return to an incomplete application at any time.

Partnership
Help Bring These Programs to Life
Our ability to launch and sustain these initiatives depends on meaningful partnerships with businesses, philanthropic supporters, educational institutions, and community organizations. We welcome financial sponsorships, in-kind contributions, and collaborative partnerships that help expand access to opportunity.
Become a Funding PartnerMore Than an Award
A welcome into the HFJO community
Selected scholarship recipients may also receive an HFJO recipient package designed to celebrate their achievement and welcome them into a community invested in their success. An award should feel like more than a transaction — it should feel like recognition, belonging and encouragement.
Product photography of the HFJO Recipient Welcome Package will be showcased here once available. In the meantime, the description above reflects the Foundation's intent for the recipient experience.
Applications are not yet open
The Foundation is currently establishing its programs and charitable registration framework. Program details and award amounts will be finalized and published before applications open.
