Program Overview

Reducing financial barriers to post-secondary education and training

The Harvey Foundation's scholarships and educational grants reduce financial barriers to post-secondary education and training for individuals and families materially affected by criminal justice-system involvement. Each award supports approved education-related expenses, including tuition and mandatory fees, required learning materials, transportation to and from study, and childcare required to attend study.

Scholarships and grants are awarded in two annual funding cycles: May to July for the fall academic term, and October to November for the winter academic term.

More Than an Award

A welcome into the HFJO community

Selected scholarship recipients may also receive an HFJO recipient package designed to celebrate their achievement and welcome them into a community invested in their success. An award should feel like more than a transaction — it should feel like recognition, belonging and encouragement.

Applicant Guidance

Eligibility & Supporting Documents

You do not need every listed document — submit the documents that exist in your circumstances. If primary or legal records are unavailable, supporting documents may be provided instead.

Primary or legal documentation

Depending on your circumstances, one or more of the following may be available. You are not required to submit every listed document.

  • · Copy of an Information or charging document
  • · Court record confirming a conviction
  • · Court record confirming withdrawal of charges
  • · Copy of a peace bond
  • · Copy of a judgment
  • · Affidavit from a legal representative

Supporting documentation

Supporting documents help demonstrate your eligibility and circumstances. You may upload more than one.

  • · Letter from a lawyer or legal representative who assisted or supported the applicant
  • · Letter from a nonprofit organization
  • · Letter from an authorized organizational representative
  • · Other relevant supporting documentation approved by administrators

Proof of Enrollment

Applicants must provide an official document from their educational institution confirming their enrollment.

  • · Official enrollment confirmation or Registrar's letter
  • · School-issued document confirming full-time or part-time status
  • · Document identifying the student, institution, program, and academic term
  • · Offer of admission accepted provisionally; final enrollment confirmation required before funding is released

If you do not have primary documentation

Not everyone has access to court records or legal documents. If primary documentation is unavailable to you:

  • · Indicate in your application that primary documentation is unavailable and provide a brief explanation.
  • · Upload more than one supporting document to demonstrate your eligibility and circumstances.
  • · The supporting documents you provide are considered together to determine whether eligibility is adequately demonstrated.

The absence of primary documentation alone never disqualifies an application.

How your documents are protected

Your privacy is protected at every step of the application process.

  • · Uploaded documents are stored in confidential private storage and are never published.
  • · Access is role-based: only you and authorized Foundation reviewers can view your application and its documents.
  • · Before submitting, you review clear consent language covering how your information is used and protected.
  • · Applications are saved as drafts automatically, so you can return to an incomplete application at any time.
